WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

If you spend enough time working with data (analytics or automation), you start to notice a pattern. I call it the HR Analytics Development Lifecycle and there are 6 stages:

  1. Identify a high value question to answer

  2. Find the data to answer the question

  3. Organize the data in a way in which you can take action

  4. Define the actions you should be taking

  5. Make sure the actions are impacting the business in a repeatable way

  6. Consider automation

As you consider taking on a new initiative, you should spend time understanding where in the lifecycle the initiative is beginning. If your team’s already identified the question to answer, amazing, now it’s time to find the data. If you already have organized data, let’s spend our time on clearly defining actionable next steps. If you’ve defined a clear process with actionable next steps and the actions are repeatedly impacting the business, let’s automate!

Don’t jump ahead too quickly. Make sure you understand where you are in the lifecycle for each data or analytics related initiative that your team takes on.

Trust me, not every workflow needs to be automated.
